Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionising the way energy in commercial  buildings is managed. Whether you are dealing with a hospital, stadium, shopping centre, office building, educational centre or hotel, AI can reduce your energy costs, manage your energy use efficiently and, over time, decrease both usage and costs even further.

The application of AI creates smart commercial buildings that can learn and optimise energy usage. AI applications result in a learning curve that allows smart buildings to continuously improve complex processes by organising and analysing large amounts of data on your energy consumption habits. AI solutions then become your automated facility energy management system.

Certain AI applications monitor and control an entire building’s energy activities in order to achieve energy conservation. These include:

  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)
  • Gas and water supply systems
  • Temperature sensors
  • Humidity
  • Air quality
  • Vibration
  • Early problem detection
  • Variable air volume systems

Examples of Artificial Intelligence applications in the commercial sectors

Google reduced their energy bill by 40%

Google consumes a large amount of energy to run its extensive data processing systems. In 2015 they reported consumption of 4,402,836 MWh of electricity in the previous year, equivalent to the average yearly consumption of about 366,903 U.S. homes.

Through DeepMind AI Google has managed to cut the company’s energy costs by approximately 40%, saving hundreds of million dollars.

Hospital in Australia reduced their energy consumption by 5%

St John of God Murdoch Hospital in Australia houses 500 beds and serves nearly 50,000 patients per year. Through AI, which used data visualisation, fault detection and closed-loop control of specific HVAC zones, the hospital reduced HVAC energy usage by 10%, about 5% of overall energy consumption. The initial reductions translated to about $4,500 in net savings each month.

Hospital in New Delhi in 6 months reduced their energy usage by 35%

Sant Parmanand hospital in New Delhi, India, a 153 bed multi-super specialty hospital, was able to reduce its monthly energy consumption by 35% in just 6 months by using an AI application.

AI helps British universities cut their energy costs by as much as 30%.

The Energy Consortium has piloted an AI energy efficiency project at six British universities. Anglia Ruskin, Bath, Bristol, Newcastle, Regents and York universities will use an AI application to identify energy waste, improve efficiency and cut costs.

The Crowne Plaza Times Square energy costs reduced by 47%

Through AI installation of EcoSmart in their 795 rooms, the Crowne Plaza Times Square in the heart of New York City has reduced its energy cost by 47%. The hotel has enjoyed a 24% reduction in HVAC runtime, and energy savings have totalled $58,800 per year.
